LEGISLATION AND POLICY
Introduction
Early
childcare and education services are regulated by legally-binding
requirements. These are the Pre-school
Regulations, which first appeared in 1996 and have been updated with the effect
from January 2007. The main purpose of
these Regulations is to ensure that standards are in place to safeguard the
health the welfare of children in pre-school services, and to promote their
development through the provision of developmentally and culturally appropriate
materials, experiences, activities and interactions. The Regulations affect the full range of
group pre-school provision, ranging from voluntary and community through to
full day-care private sector provision.
All employers and employees are also protected at work by the Safety, Health
and Welfare at Work Act 2005, which imposes duties and responsibilities on both
parties to maintain safe practice. The
childcare worker need to explore the factors affecting child health and
well-being, and familiarize the legislation governing children’s welfare in
Ireland. (Source: Child Health and Well-Being by Niamh Gaine)
