The setting should
devise and implement a wide range of policies and procedures to promote health
and safety. Appendix of Siolta list 36
policies that should be followed by ECCE settings to meet this standard. As an ECCE worker, their responsibility both
to make sure that the centre is safe for children and to prevent
accidents. As anyone who has spent any
time with young children knows, they can be prone to accidents.
Ø Young children are
curious about the world around them and want to explore their environment. This can lead to unsafe situations when children’s
curiosity gets the better of them.
Ø Young children have no
sense of danger and do not have the knowledge or experience of the world to
know what is dangerous. A young child
does not realize that a hot kettle will burn them or that broken glass will cut
them.
Ø Young children may be
over confident in their physical abilities and push themselves too far
physically.
