Food and Nutrition for Pre-schools

The Minister of State at the Department of Health & Children with a special responsibility for Children, published these Food & Nutrition Guidelines for Pre-schools.  These guidelines are relevant to pre-school children aged 0-5 years and are intended as a resource and guide for all relevant stakeholders; carers, parents and pre-school inspectors. It fulfils the important commitment to “sufficient, nutritious and varied food, available to a pre-school child”, under the Childcare Regulations 1996. As outlined in the guidelines, the early years are critically important for the formation of good habits and a positive attitude towards healthy, varied eating. Research findings show a correlation between a wide range of positive health behaviours and the consumption of fruit and vegetables, amongst school children, and healthy eating is essential for long-term health benefits.

Components of a balance diet

A balanced diet is the best way to improve your health, is about adding all the essential factors necessary for growth, so that every part of the body gets what it needs to function properly. A balanced diet is also indicative of a proportioned diet. This means that you’re not only eating the right food items, you’re also eating them in the proper amounts.  A dietician will devise a suitable diet in consultation with other healthcare professionals and parents.
