The Disability Act 2005 places a statutory
obligation on public service providers to support access to services and
facilities for people with disabilities. Under the Act, people with
disabilities are entitled to:
1.
Have their health and educational needs assessed.
2.
Have individual service statements drawn up, setting out what
services they should get.
3.
Access independent complaints and appeals procedures.
4.
Access public buildings and public service employment.
Under this Act parents
can request that an assessment of the child’s needs be carried out. From this an assessment of needs to report
will be drawn up, which include the following information:
Ø Whether the person has
a disability
Ø The nature and extent
of the disability
Ø The health and
education needs arising from the disability
Ø The services
considered appropriate to those needs and the timescale ideally required for
their delivery
Ø When a review of
assessment should take place
